Artist interview with Jono Brown

Learn about the work of jono brown, a local artist creating readymades that will make you stop and stare.

Brown has recently exhibited at The Vault, in a group exhibition titled Creative Conference, that took local creative’s work and exhibited them in conversation with one another.

Q: Your use of readymade objects adds a unique dimension to your work, how do these objects contribute to the narrative & meaning of your work?

A: The objects contribute to my work as they are self referential & mirror myself. I continuously choose objects based on nostalgia or interest.

Q: How do you navigate the interplay of acrylic & found objects in your creations?

A: I enjoy the freedom of using acrylics & how I can easily amend mistakes due to the quick drying process. I can go over as many times as I need. I choose to use cheap acrylic paint as a revolt against prestigious materials in the same way I use unconventional undervalued items to paint over.

Q: Can you walk us through how you select objects & integrate them into your artwork?

A: My decision making to choose found objects to paint over is very spontaneous & irrational, while still a conscious one. I choose items that hold a ‘spectacle’ to them, are visually stimulating & have a rich history worth unravelling or evocative connotations to follow.

Q: Your art invited viewers to explore & interpret, how do you hope audiences engage with your pieces?

A: I am to make my paintings frivolous & absurd in hopes to amuse & intrigue the viewers while sometimes tackling challenging themes with a witty, satirical coating to spark conversation around the subject matter.
